From Slave Songs to Popular Music explores the evolution of Black music across its many forms, tracing its journey from the tribal rituals and ceremonial dances of Africa to today's hip-hop culture, where rhythm and lyrical storytelling have become powerful tools for expression.

The project examines fourteen influential genres that shaped the history of Black music. These include the slave songs of the Mississippi plantations, the melancholic poetry of the Blues, the improvisational spirit of Jazz, Gospel music as a spiritual alternative to secular sounds, the emergence of Rhythm & Blues in the 1940s, the energetic grooves of Funk in the 1960s and 1970s, and many more.

Born from oppression, resilience, and the pursuit of freedom, Black music evolved from a marginalized cultural expression into one of the most influential forces in global popular culture. Today, the artists and genres that emerged from these roots continue to shape music, art, and society around the world.

This project presents a comprehensive visual exploration of that musical and cultural evolution while paying tribute to the artists and the rich legacy of African American culture. The editorial design combines custom hand lettering with monochromatic digital illustrations, creating a cohesive visual language that reflects the spirit and history of each musical movement.
